LoRaWAN Takes Center Stage at Salon des Maires 2025: A Milestone for Connected Territories in France

Last month, I had the privilege of attending the Salon des Maires et des Collectivités Locales 2025 in Paris, France's premier gathering for local government leaders and territorial innovation. The event proved to be a landmark moment for LoRaWAN technology and the LoRa Alliance, showcasing the growing momentum of IoT adoption across French municipalities.

Orange's LoRa Hybrid Launch: A New Chapter

On November 24th, I presented the LoRa Alliance and its thriving ecosystem during Orange's LoRa Hybrid launch conference. This innovative approach to territorial IoT deployment represents a significant evolution in how cities and regions can leverage LoRaWAN connectivity. The hybrid model offers municipalities flexible, scalable solutions that adapt to their specific needs—whether for smart lighting, environmental monitoring, or utilities management.

FNCCR Joins the LoRa Alliance

A highlight of the event was co-signing the LoRa Alliance membership agreement with FNCCR (Fédération Nationale des Collectivités Concédantes et Régies), the national federation representing local authorities in charge of public services. This partnership underscores the strategic importance of LoRaWAN for French territorial digital infrastructure and opens new avenues for collaboration between the Alliance and local governments across France.

LoRaWAN: The Technology of Choice for French Territories

The timing couldn't be more relevant. As detailed in Infranum's comprehensive report on territorial connectivity and digitalization, LoRaWAN has emerged as the technology of choice for connected territories throughout France. The report highlights how municipalities are increasingly turning to LoRaWAN for its:

  • Long-range, low-power capabilities ideal for widespread sensor networks
  • Cost-effectiveness compared to cellular alternatives
  • Open standards preventing vendor lock-in
  • Proven reliability in real-world deployments

Strong Industry Presence

The widespread adoption of LoRaWAN was evident throughout the exhibition hall. Major players in the French connectivity ecosystem showcased LoRaWAN solutions, including Netmore, Orange, Axione, Sogetrel, Infranum, Ubicité, and Fontroche. This diversity of providers demonstrates the maturity and competitiveness of the LoRaWAN market in France.

As noted in Totem Towers' coverage of the event, telecommunications and connectivity solutions were at the forefront of discussions about tomorrow's cities—with LoRaWAN playing a central role in that vision.

Looking Ahead

The Salon des Maires 2025 reinforced what many in the industry already knew: LoRaWAN is not just a technology for the future—it's the present reality for smart territorial management in France. With strong support from telecom operators, infrastructure providers, and now the backing of organizations like FNCCR, the ecosystem is poised for continued growth.

As French municipalities face mounting pressure to digitalize services, improve efficiency, and meet sustainability goals, LoRaWAN offers a proven, scalable pathway forward. The connections made and agreements signed at this year's salon will undoubtedly accelerate this transformation in the months and years ahead.
